Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday he had appointed two new judges to the San Diego Superior Court bench, filling vacancies left by two retiring justices.
Newsom said he had appointed attorneys Lizbet Muñoz and Roy Lai to replace outgoing judges Eddie Sturgeon and Keri G. Katz, respectively.
Both judges are set to be sworn-in next week, court spokesperson Emily Cox said Friday.
Muñoz has served as a court commissioner at the San Diego Superior Court since 2019, the governor’s office said in an email. Before that, she was a founder and principal attorney at Lizbet Muñoz W., APC from 2004 to 2019.
After graduating from Thomas Jefferson School of Law, she became a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society of San Diego from 2001 to 2004, officials said.
She has no registered party preference, Newsom’s office said.
Lai graduated from Loyola Law School and began working as a deputy in the City Attorney’s Office from 2004 to 2005. He then joined the District Attorney’s Office, where he has been working as a prosecutor ever since.
He is a registered Democrat.
Both positions on the bench pay an annual salary of $244,727.
