A 44-year-old man accused of concealing a gun in his waistband was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Tuesday after he allegedly got into a violent scuffle with deputies in San Marcos, a sheriff’s official said.
Deputies approached the man for allegedly having an open container of alcohol in the parking lot of the Day’s Inn motel on West San Marcos Boulevard near Knoll Road around 11 a.m. While talking to him they saw an object in his lower waist area they later determined was a handgun, said sheriff’s Lt. Matthew Carpenter.
The man allegedly reached toward his waistband, and deputies moved to restrain him. The trio got into a violent scuffle, with the man repeatedly reaching for the gun, Carpenter said. One deputy was injured in the fight and taken to the hospital to be checked out for a possible broken hand.
The suspect was detained and was found to be carrying a loaded gun, with a round in the chamber, Carpenter said.
After his arrest, the man was checked out at a hospital and then booked in Vista Jail. He is being held without bail on several charges, including two counts of attempted murder, two counts of obstructing an officer and gun- and ammunition-related charges, according to an online jail log.
