A Harbor Police officer was injured Wednesday morning in a shootout in Little Italy as officers were looking for a gunman who had shot two people — one fatally — a short time earlier and less than a mile away.
The officer and the gunman were both taken to hospitals in Hillcrest, San Diego police Lt. Daniel Meyer said. He did not have information about the condition of either the officer or the suspect.
Just after 8:20 a.m., police responded to a shooting at the corner of West A Street and Union Street, police officials said. Officers arrived to find a man and a woman had been shot. One of them was dead.
Washington Elementary School on State Street in Little Italy was put on lockdown as officers fanned out to search for a gunman.
About 45 minutes later, Harbor Police — who had joined in the search — spotted a person matching the suspect’s description, Meyer said.
The gunman and multiple police officers opened fire, Meyer said. One officer was shot at least once.
According to police radio traffic, the suspect was reported to be “down,” and a gun was seen near the person’s left hand.
According to scanner traffic, rounds were discovered in a building on Kettner Boulevard near Juniper Street but no one there was reported hurt.
