Deputies discovered a car jammed with passengers early Monday when they tried to pull the driver over in Spring Valley for a broken tail light — and discovered the vehicle had just been stolen.
Nine people, including two juveniles, were arrested after deputies pulled the Hyundai sedan over shortly after 1 a.m., said Lt. Noah Zarnow.
Deputies noticed the car had a brake light out and tried to stop it on Helix Street near Bancroft Drive. Instead of stopping, the driver took off. As they were chasing the car, they learned the sedan had just been reported stolen.
At the entrance to state Route 94 at Bancroft, the driver hit a curb, lost control and ran into an embankment, Zarnow said. The driver stopped and several passengers got out of the vehicle and began running.
Three people were detained in the vehicle and six others were found in the area, Zarnow said.
Two of those arrested were being held on no-bail warrants and four were identified as suspects in a theft case in Rancho San Diego from last week, he said.
No other information was available.
