The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the benefits that are discontinued for people who claim state pension.
Certain benefits can be claimed at any stage of adulthood. However, upon reaching state pension age, which is currently 66, some benefits become available for claim, while others stop.
The four benefits that state pensioners cannot claim include Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Universal Credit, and Income Support.
The benefits that do become available include the state pension. The type people are paid depends on when they were born, reports Cambridgeshire Live.
The Basic State Pension is accessible to those who reached state pension age before April 6, 2016, provided they have made sufficient national insurance contributions. The New State Pension is available to those who reach state pension age on or after April 6, 2016, again subject to adequate national insurance contributions.
Attendance Allowance can also be claimed if you are of pension age or older and require care or have difficulty getting around. For Pension Age Disability Payment can be claimed by Scottish residents.
Pension Credit becomes claimable once you or your partner reach state pension age. This benefit is designed for older people with a low income.
As of May 15, 2019, Pension Credit can typically only be claimed if both you and your partner are over Pension Credit age.
The Winter Fuel Payment is accessible once you or your partner have attained pension age, are in receipt of certain benefits and were eligible during a qualifying week. This is a single annual payment of £200 or £300 to help cover your winter heating expenses.
State pensioners cannot submit new claims for Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Adult Disability Payment or Personal Independence Payment (PIP). However, they can renew the claim, even after surpassing state pension age.
This is provided that they are claiming for the same health conditions and the previous claim ended less than a year ago.
DLA claimants born before April 8, 1948 will not be transitioned to PIP, while other claimants will be moved to PIP.
