A 20-year-old man was arraigned Tuesday in connection with a shooting in Vista last year that killed one man and left two others severely injured, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said.
Jose Ulices Luna pleaded not guilty in Vista Superior Court to one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder with special allegations of using a firearm to inflict injury.
At the time of his arraignment, Luna was already in jail on suspicion of robbery and carjacking. He had been arrested in August.
The murder and attempted murder charges stem from a July 2024 shooting reported that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Antonio Junior Calderon Mendiola.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, five males entered Palomar Hospital around 2:30 a.m. on July 20. Four of them were suffering from gunshot wounds, officials said.
The shooting itself occurred on Newport Terrace near Newport Drive in Vista, officials said.
Mendiola died, and two others, aged 17 and 18, were seriously injured, the Sheriff’s Office said.
A 16-year-old boy was also injured, officials said.
Luna is also charged with carjacking, four counts of robbery and evading an officer stemming from incidents that occurred in August.
