A hiker was taken to a hospital after authorities responded to an apparent shooting just east of Jacumba Hot Springs and north of the U.S.-Mexico border on Wednesday, a law enforcement official said.
The incident was reported to authorities about noon in an area known as Valley of the Moon, Imperial County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Mistriel said. The area is near the boundary of San Diego and Imperial counties.
“There was a group of individuals hiking, and it appears one of the hikers may have been shot,” Mistriel said.
Mistriel said the hikers were in a remote area, but first responders “were able to get the victim transported out of the area.” The lieutenant said the hiker was taken to a hospital, but the hiker’s condition was not immediately available.
No other details about the shooting were immediately available, including whether the suspected shooter was apprehended or what may have preceded the incident.
