For the days when you’re low on time and energy — but still want to get moving — try this paved walk in Serra Mesa.
The Stonecrest Village Trail takes visitors along a 1.5-mile out-and-back walk behind the community of the same name. The path is located directly next to homes, but it also offers pretty views of wild vegetation growing within a canyon separating Stonecrest Village from surrounding neighborhoods.
I wouldn’t call this a hike — so it might not be a great option for those seeking more of an adventure — but it’s a perfect walk to do between meetings or during a lunch break, especially if you’re already nearby. Plus, the wide road is accessible for bikes and strollers.

As I walked along the path, I was also struck by how a small amount of nature and exercise really goes a long way. Before I arrived, I was stressed with work after racing across town to different communities. But I instantly felt calmer as soon as I started walking and taking in the scene of lemonade berry, fountain grass and fragrant sage lining the trail.
Though I wish I had more time to do a longer, more difficult hike, I was surprised by how much better I felt after this short and easy one.
To begin, park near the Stonecrest Village entrance, located on West Canyon Avenue. Street parking is available near the trailhead. The trail starts as a sidewalk near the neighborhood entrance sign.

Walk about 200 feet on the sidewalk before the trail heads downhill, going south. It’s lined with trees, though they aren’t shady, so be prepared for full sun if you’re hiking around midday.
The trail continues straight and downhill, though the grade becomes much more gradual before fully flattening out around the 0.5 mile mark. After about 350 more yards, there’s a pleasant-looking bench for those looking to rest.
The trail seemed to technically end at the bench, but I walked a little farther for about 500 feet — along a shady path that traveled between homes — before turning around. Note that the return walk is slightly more strenuous since it includes an uphill climb.
