A 32-year-old man died early Thursday morning after his car crashed down an embankment and struck a tree in La Mesa, police said.
The solo vehicle crash happened around 2:50 a.m. on Bancroft Drive in the far southeastern corner of the city, La Mesa police Lt. Katy Lynch said.
The driver was headed south on Bancroft toward Campo Road and state Route 94 when he lost control of his Honda Civic around a curve, crashing down a short slope and hitting a tree near the backyard of a home on Citradora Drive, Lynch said.
The driver was stuck in the car until Heartland Fire and Rescue crews were able to free him. Medics took him to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where he died, Lynch said.
The man’s name was not immediately released.
Lynch said traffic detectives were investigating the cause of the crash and asked anyone with information about the deadly wreck to contact La Mesa police at 619-667-1400.
