A group of people in a minivan trapped in a flooded La Jolla intersection were saved from the swift-running water by search and rescue officials Thursday night amid intense downpours across much of San Diego County.
The street flooding came as the National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for the region. That advisory, issued around 8 p.m., could be extended until 11, a forecaster said.
Firefighters and lifeguards received a report around 8 p.m. that four vehicles were submerged at the intersection of La Jolla Village and Villa La Jolla drives, San Diego Fire-Rescue officials said.
Lifeguards entered the water and pulled the minivan’s three occupants out before taking them to safety, officials said.
Firefighters said they rescued one more person in another car, and the two remaining vehicles were empty by the time firefighters responded.
Both roads were closed in the area as of 9 p.m. due to the flooding.
Just after 9 p.m., NWS meteorologist Paul Steward said the heaviest rain was falling in areas stretching from Clairemont Mesa to Miramar, at rates of close to half an inch an hour.
“We could see an additional half inch to an inch possible,” he added.
