A 62-year-old driver was killed when another driver crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into his car in Lakeside on Sunday evening, authorities said.
The crash occurred around 6:25 p.m. when a 42-year-old man driving a Ford pickup south on Wildcat Canyon Road near Muth Valley Road veered over the double yellow lines into the northbound lane for unknown reasons, said California Highway Patrol Officer Jared Grieshaber.
The pickup ran head-on into the Volkswagen sedan that was heading north. The force of the impact caused the truck to overturn in the traffic lanes while the Volkswagen veered off the east side of the road, Grieshaber said.
The Volkswagen driver died before he could be taken to a hospital. His name has not yet been released. The driver of the Ford was transported to a hospital with major injuries.
CHP officers are investigating the crash. Drugs or alcohol were not believed to be factors in the collision, Grieshaber said.
A traffic alert was issued for the road shortly before 7 p.m. It reopened around 2½ hours later, the CHP said.
