A driver died and her passenger was injured after their car was rear-ended by a driver suspected of DUI in Carlsbad Sunday, according to a California Highway Patrol official.
The crash occurred when a Ford pickup collided into the back of a Nissan sedan around 9:55 p.m. on the southbound side of Interstate 5 south of Cannon Road, causing the pickup to overturn, said Officer Hunter Gerber in a news release.
The 44-year-old woman driving the Nissan and her 31-year-old female passenger suffered major injuries and were taken to a hospital, where the driver died, Gerber said.
The driver’s identity had not been released pending notification of her family.
Investigators said the 53-year-old man, a La Jolla resident, driving the pickup suffered minor injuries and was also taken to a hospital.
He was later booked into Vista jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, murder, gross vehicular manslaughter and resisting an officer, according to online arrest records.
The incident is under investigation.
