A 77-year-old man was struck and killed by a pickup early Monday in the Encanto area, San Diego police said.
The collision was reported shortly before 5:45 a.m. on Imperial Avenue near 68th Street. The driver was heading west on Imperial in the No. 2 lane when the pedestrian stepped in front of the truck and was struck, said police Officer Sarah Foster.
Officers were called by someone who witnessed the crash and then by the driver of the Ford pickup, who reporting hitting the man.
A dispatcher gave the 41-year-old driver instructions on how to perform CPR, but when officers arrived they determined the pedestrian, who suffered major head trauma, had died.
The name of the man who died was not released.
