To help, professional makeup artist Saffron Hughes who works with FalseEyelashes.co.uk, has shared the “common makeup mistakes” which “add years to the face” and how to fix them.
The expert said: “Ageing is a natural and beautiful process, however, you could be adding years to the face just by the way you apply your makeup when that may not be your intention.
“The way we do our makeup should change with age and by following some professional advice and doing it properly, it can deliver a fresh face.”
1. Caked on foundation
The concept of less is more is certainly true when it comes to applying makeup to mature skin, according to the expert.
Using a thicker, cream-based foundation can lead to it settling into fine lines and creases throughout the day.
Instead, the expert recommended opting for a serum-based foundation or a tinted moisturiser which can help to create the appearance of a well-hydrated face.
The expert noted: “This will leave you looking more alert and youthful, all while effectively concealing imperfections.
“Likewise, applying excessive concealer under the eyes can result in pronounced creases, especially when followed by the use of powder for setting.”
2. Thin eyebrows
Hair, including eyebrows, tend to thin naturally as people age, which can result in the face looking older.
The expert explained: “To achieve a youthful appearance and enhance your facial framing, utilise a fine brow pencil.
“Create small, delicate strokes to create the impression of full, slightly arched brows that provide a lifting effect to your face.
“Drawing individual brow hairs yields a more realistic result compared to using powder or gel products. Although it may require a bit more time, the transformation is truly remarkable.”
3. Zero primer
Using face products without a primer can accentuate the appearance of fine lines and result in creasing, unveiling textured skin underneath, according to the expert.
A primer, particularly a hydrating one can help to create a smoother base for mature skin before the application of foundation or concealer.
Saffron added: “Additionally, silicone-based primers can be highly effective in filling in areas with pronounced texture, such as the corners of the eyes or where smile lines develop.”
4. Dark lipstick
The expert continued: “Dark lipsticks, though often favoured during colder months, can make you appear older. As we age, our lips tend to lose their fullness and definition. While it might be tempting to overdraw the lips for a plumper look, it’s advisable to steer clear of darker shades.
“Additionally, as the skin on our lips becomes drier with age, wearing matte-finish lipstick can accentuate any textural issues on and around the lips.
“Instead, consider outlining your lips with a shade just one or two tones deeper than your natural lip colour, then follow up with a lip gloss.
“Gloss adds dimension to the lips and creates the impression of a fuller, more youthful pout.”
