Today is double treat day for Marvel fans. Not only do we get a new movie with The Marvels in cinemas today, but also the Loki season 2 finale on Disney+.
The conclusions to both have huge moments that will have massive implications for the future of the MCU.
The Marvels’ final scenes saw Monica Rambeau having to close a rip in the fabric of space-time.
Another reality from across the multiverse was pouring into the MCU’s Earth-616 universe.
Photon was able to do this, but Captain Marvel couldn’t save her in time before she was trapped on the other side.
In The Marvels end credits scene, Monica woke up in a hospital bed beside her late mother Maria Rambeau. However, this is a variant who doesn’t know who she is.
A doctor enters the room and it turns out to be Kelsey Grammer’s Beast from the Fox X-Men movies, who is standing by a big X for X-Men door. He informs Photon that she’s crossing the multiverse into their reality before saying he’ll update Charles, ie Charles Xavier aka Professor X. So what does this mean for the future?
The next MCU movie, released next summer, will be Deadpool 3 starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. The film is rumoured to be something of a Spider-Man No Way Home for the Fox X-Men characters.
There have been rumblings that Deadpool and Wolverine will get caught up with the Time Variance Authority, which brings us onto the Loki season 2’s finale.
In Loki season 2’s finale, the God of Mischief finally found his Glorious Purpose. To save the multiverse and its various timelines, he takes on the sole burden of becoming the God of Stories, replacing He Who Remains as the enthroned overseer of all time. Meanwhile, the TVA is now focused on tracking down Kang variants, with Mobius hinting at one in a divergent timeline of Earth-616. Deadpool 3 is the next big multiverse MCU movie, which perhaps Loki will feature in if the TVA is involved.
All this is leading up to 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, which is rumoured to involve the likes of Jackman’s Wolverine and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man teaming up with variants of Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Captain America as a multiversal Avengers to defeat the Kangs. Oh, and expect Loki to be reunited with Thor for the first time since Avengers Infinity War. That just seems inevitable.
The Marvels is out now in cinemas, Loki is streaming on Disney+ and Deadpool 3 hits the big screen on July 26, 2023.
