Now, Jakob Marsee can have an offseason.
He’s earned every minute of it, however short it could be.
The Padres’ 22-year-old prospect was named the Arizona Fall League’s MVP before going 1-for-4 in Peoria’s 6-5 loss to Surprise on Saturday in the championship game.
Marsee’s only hit in the game was a single. He also walked and scored a run while playing all of the championship game in center field.
Marsee earned MVP honors by hitting .391/.509/.707 with five homers, 20 RBIs and 16 steals in 19 tries.
Marsee also started in the Fall Stars Game the previous weekend.
A sixth-round pick out of Central Michigan in 2022, Marsee hit .274/.413/.428 with 16 homers, 46 RBIs and a Padres system-best 46 steals.
Padres right-hander Braden Nett walked five in the start in the championship game but allowed one run on three hits in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out one.
The only other Padre to play in Peoria’s championship, Graham Pauley flied out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning. He hit .238/.267/.464 with five homers in the fall league.
Pauley, who led the system with 23 homers, and Marsee are ranked No. 11 and No. 12, respectively, among Padres prospects by MLB.com.
An undrafted free agent, Nett could also be on the radar on the next update after a strong start to his fall league residency (4.67 ERA over 17 1/3 innings in regular season).
