A 27-year-old driver and her 22-year-old passenger died early Saturday when the car they were in went off north Interstate 5 in Chula Vista and overturned, authorities said.
The crash was reported shortly after 3 a.m. and involved a black BMW X5 that was heading north on I-5 near E Street, the California Highway Patrol said.
The force of the crash ripped off the roof of the car and both the driver and passenger were ejected, officials said. They died before they could be taken to a hospital.
The wrecked car, which was obstructing the roadway, was hit from behind by a white Ford Mustang. The Ford’s driver, a 28-year-old Chula Vista resident, stayed at the scene after the collision and cooperated with investigators. He was determined not to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, officials said.
Toxicology tests by the county Medical Examiner’s Office will determine if the BMW driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The names of the two people who died have not been released pending notification of family members, the CHP said.
