A suspect was arrested in the killing of a 35-year-old man who was gunned down during an argument with a group of men earlier this year in the Chollas Creek area, San Diego police said Tuesday.
Kevin Castaneda, 20, of San Diego was arrested as he tried to cross back into the United States at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on Monday, homicide Lt. Jud Campbell said in a news release.
He was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder. He was being held without bail, according to online jail records.
The shooting was reported around 7:25 p.m. July 30 on Altadena Avenue near Wightman Street.
Officers found Marcelo Barajas of San Diego lying in the street suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his upper body, Campbell said. He died at a hospital.
Officers learned Barajas was walking down the sidewalk when a group of men approached. A fight broke out, and one of the men shot Barajas.
Homicide detectives later identified Castaneda as a suspect. Campbell didn’t say how.
The investigation is ongoing.
