Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis has shared an easy “trick” for Shell and Octopus Energy customers to make a free £50.
Teasing the tip in the most recent Money Saving Expert newsletter, the financial journalist said: “Shell Energy customer? A trick to make you some money (Octopus customers, it’s worth a listen for you too)”.
The “trick”, initially shared during the Martin Lewis Money Show, involves Octopus’s “Refer a Friend” scheme.
After a viewer called Michael wrote to the show thanking the team for the prompt after successfully securing his £50, Mr Lewis said on the show: “If you watched the show – that was my naughty little comment because Shell customers are being switched to Octopus.
“If you know someone on Octopus, they have a refer a friend scheme. So, before you’re automatically moved over, just go and get your friend to give you a reference and move you over a bit earlier.
“And then he gets £50 and she’ll get £50 as well. Octopus is going to hate me for that. I didn’t say it. You didn’t hear it here!”
Octopus Energy Group signed a deal earlier this year to buy Shell Energy in the UK and Germany. The move will see the provider take on two million new home energy and broadband customers.
The deal is expected to conclude in the fourth quarter of 2023 following regulatory approval, after which all Shell energy and broadband customers will be contacted about the next steps via email.
According to Octopus, the transition will not disrupt customer energy supply, nor will it bear an impact on customer’s credit balances.
On the topic of Shell, the Money Saving Experts shared another tip in the newsletter to get cheap superfast broadband from the provider.
The deal prices Shell Energy’s superfast 109Mb broadband at £18 per month. The MSE team explained: “Newbies can get this Shell Energy 109Mb broadband-only deal (available in around 40 percent of homes) for £10 upfront, then £27/mth, but with a £120 Amazon voucher claimable within 4mths.” (sic)
They continued: “Factor that in and it’s equivalent to £17.82/mth over the 12mth contract – the cheapest we’ve seen from a nationwide supplier at this speed, though Shell’s service rating ain’t great.” (sic)
