Octopus Energy customers will be able to start saving money on their bills from today.
The energy provider is offering eligible customers the opportunity to earn rewards if they reduce electricity usage during specified peak times, and more than one million customers are already primed to take part.
This winter’s first ‘Octoplus Saving Session’ will take place this evening (November 16) between 5:30pm and 6.30pm. Participants who have signed up will have been notified via the app, email or WhatsApp.
Alex Schoch, head of flexibility at Octopus Energy, said: “Saving Sessions is back with a bang this winter and our customers are clamouring for more.
“We’re incredibly proud of the passion Octopus customers put into ‘Saving Sessions’, and even more excited to be able to offer more ways for customers to earn through ‘Surprise Sessions’ this year.
“Over one million Octopus Energy customers will now contribute to cost savings in the system and accelerate our transition to a clean, fossil-fuel-free grid by reducing electricity consumption during peak hours.”
The scheme was launched last year as part of the National Grid ESO’s Demand Flexibility Service (DFS).
Last winter, £5.3million in savings were passed onto 700,000 Octopus Energy customers. The top five percent of participants enjoyed average savings of over £40.
Around 2.6 million Octopus smart meter customers are currently eligible to join the initiative, and anyone not yet enrolled can do so at any point.
Customers will be rewarded with ‘Octopoints’. The number of ‘Octopoints’ earned will vary based on the specific event, and streak bonuses.
Prize draws will also be up for grabs for those participating in multiple sessions in a row.
In addition, the provider is also introducing ‘Surprise Sessions’ this year, notifying customers at shorter notice but offering bigger rewards.
These ‘Sessions’ will provide an opportunity for customers to contribute to a cleaner energy system, while getting their hands on some cool prizes.
The Octoplus rewards scheme will allow customers to exchange their Octopoints for account credits, and soon, for charity donations or exclusive merchandise, among other options.
Who is eligible to take part?
Any Octopus customer with an electricity smart meter and paying their bills with a direct debit can sign up to Octoplus.
To also be eligible for Saving Sessions, the provider will need to be getting regular half-hourly readings from the household’s smart meter – specifically, they’ll need to have received 80 percent of readings in the 15 days prior to an event.
