A burglar was shot and killed by a resident while attempting to break into a Vista home early Thursday morning, sheriff’s officials said.
Deputies received a call around 5 a.m. from the resident saying that a man was in the backyard and possibly going to break into their home on York Drive near Santa Fe Avenue, sheriff’s Lt. Joseph Jarjura said in a news release.
While still on the phone with the Sheriff’s Department, the caller told dispatchers that the man had now gotten into the home through a window, Jarjura said.
Dispatchers then heard the resident fire a single gunshot.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they found the burglar mortally wounded. He was taken to a hospital where he died. He has not been identified pending notification of his family.
The resident was the only person home at the time and was not injured.
The incident is under investigation.
