A 33-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured in Hillcrest Sunday night when he was struck by a sedan driven by a suspected drunken driver who briefly fled the scene after the crash, San Diego police said.
A 35-year-old man was driving a silver 2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 west on University Avenue near 10th Avenue shortly after 8:40 p.m. and struck the pedestrian, who was walking in traffic lanes on University, police said.
After hitting the man, the driver pulled over and exited his vehicle, police Officer John Buttle said in a statement. Two witnesses saw the driver run away.
He returned and the witnesses told him to stay but he ran off again. This time, the witnesses chased him and walked him back to the crash scene where he was met by officers, Buttle said.
The pedestrian was taken to a hospital with a skull fracture and brain bleed, Buttle said.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of hit and run and felony DUI.
