A man suspected of beating another man with a loaded gun led officers on a lengthy chase that ended in a SWAT standoff in Ramona, San Diego police said.
The incident was first reported about 11:30 a.m. after the suspect attacked another man at a home on Monroe Avenue near Kensington Drive, police said. Arriving officers spotted the assailant leaving on a motorcycle, and when they tried to pull the vehicle over, the man rode off.
According to police, the two men had struggled over the gun and a loaded magazine fell out. Police were able to retrieve the loaded magazine from the Kensington scene.
Officers on the road, and then a crew in a police helicopter, followed the man to Vista Ramona Road where he holed up in a large barn-like structure near East Julian Highway, police said.
The man ignored repeated orders to surrender, and officers called in a SWAT team and crisis negotiators about 1:30 p.m. Police believe the man is armed and dangerous.
Several nearby roads were closed near the standoff as a precaution. The stalemate was ongoing as of 6 p.m.
