San Diego State will play both Oregon State and Washington State in football in 2024 after the Mountain West officially announced a scheduling agreement with the Pac-12’s two remaining schools.
It was anticipated to be a two-year agreement, but only the 2024 season was mentioned in the conference’s release.
With 10 of the 12 Pac-12 schools leaving the conference next season, Oregon State and Washington State were left with nine-game gaps in their schedules. This agreement fills six of those slots for each team.
The Mountain West schedule will be reduced from eight to seven games next season, and each MW school will add a game against either the Beavers or the Cougars.
SDSU was one of three MW schools that already had one of the teams on its 2024 schedule — Sept. 7 against Washington State at Snapdragon Stadium — so the Aztecs will add Oregon State.
It has not been announced when SDSU will play the Beavers. The Aztecs have an open date on Sept. 21, although they are still looking to add another nonconference opponent to the schedule.
In addition to Washington State and Oregon State, their other two nonconference games are at Cal (Sept. 14) and at Central Michigan (Sept. 28).
It will be the second straight season playing the Beavers. SDSU lost 26-9 at Oregon State on Sept. 16.
According to the MW, the games against Oregon State and Washington State will not count in the conference standings and neither the Beavers nor the Cougars will be eligible for the MW championship game.
“This is a unique and unprecedented opportunity for Oregon State and Washington State to play against highly-competitive Mountain West football programs in 2024,” MW commissioner Gloria Nevarez said in a statement. “The scheduling agreement will expand the Mountain West footprint and enhance our national brand, while providing our student-athletes with new opportunities, all in line with our strategic priorities. The scheduling agreement strengthens the league’s non-conference schedules, and we look forward to having Oregon State and Washington State be a part of the 2024 slate.”
The MW said the revised 2024 schedule will be announved soon. The conference had released the 2023-25 opponents in July of 2022.
SDSU was scheduled to play home games against Air Force, Colorado State, Hawaii and Wyoming and road games at Fresno State, New Mexico, UNLV and Utah State. One of those opponents now will be replaced with Oregon State.
