The Marine who died in a rollover crash during training at Camp Pendleton this week was identified as a Michigan native on Thursday.
Sgt. Matthew K. Bylski died Tuesday when the Amphibious Combat Vehicle he was in crashed while making a “ground movement” about 6 p.m. Bylski, who was a trained Amphibious Combat Vehicle crewman, was serving as vehicle commander when the rollover happened.
Fourteen other Marines were in the vehicle when it crashed. One remains in the hospital in good condition. The others were treated and released, 11 at hospitals, and two at the scene of the collision.
Bylski, a native of Royal Oak, Michigan, joined the Marine Corps in January 2019. He was last assigned to Battalion Landing team 1/5, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
Bylski received several awards over the course of his military career, including two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, a Navy Meritous Unit Commendation, a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and a National Defense Service Medal.
“Words fail to express our sorrow at the tragic loss of Sgt. Bylski; an outstanding Marine and a leader within his platoon,” said Col. Sean Dynan, commanding officer of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, in a statement. “The MEU – the Marines who lived, trained, and learned from Sgt. Bylski, mourn alongside his family and friends. The entire 15th MEU ‘Vanguard’ family is affected by his absence.”
The incident remains under investigation.
