A 53-year-old inmate died after being stabbed allegedly by two other inmates at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility on Saturday, state officials said.
Officers at the state prison responded around 2:20 p.m. to an altercation involving three prisoners and saw inmate Guy Perez being stabbed in the upper torso with “inmate-manufactured weapons,” according to a press release from state prison officials.
Guards used chemical agents to break up the attack, officials said. Perez suffered several puncture wounds in his upper torso and was taken to a triage unit within the prison, where he died around 3 p.m.
The two men who allegedly attacked Perez were placed in restricted housing, according to state authorities. The stabbing is under investigation.
Perez was serving 25 years to life for first-degree murder and kidnapping. He was transferred to Richard Donovan from Merced County in 1997.
The 38-year-old and 49-year-old men accused of killing Perez are both serving lengthy sentences. The younger of the two is serving 48 years for two counts of attempted murder. The older alleged attacker is serving 50 years to life for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and battery on a peace officer.
