A 20-year-old man died in a fiery crash early Sunday after he lost control of his Tesla and crashed into a light pole in the University City neighborhood, San Diego police said.
The man was driving a 2021 Tesla Model 3 on Genesee Avenue near Centurian Square, near University City High School, shortly after 4:20 a.m. when he made an unsafe move and hit a right side curb, said police Officer Sarah Foster. The car continued forward and slammed into a light pole.
By time firefighters and police arrived, the car was engulfed in flames, which spread to some nearby brush.
The driver died before he could be taken to a hospital. He was the only person in the vehicle.
His name and other details weren’t immediately available.
Roads in the area were closed for several hours as police conducted their investigation and towed the wreckage away.
