Every year, the governments of Indian states and union territories (UTs) publish in advance a list of public holidays under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881. On these days, all government offices as well as banks remain closed in their respective geographies.
The same list also contains sectional holidays, which are not declared as public holidays, and are fixed on the basis of various local festivities. Therefore, bank holidays in every state and UT differ among each other. Besides, there are three national public holidays in India, which are mandatorily observed by banks across the country. These holidays are Republic Day (Jan. 26), Independence Day (Aug. 15), and Gandhi Jayanti (Oct. 2).
Banking institutions across the country also remain closed on second and fourth Saturdays of every month, while Sundays are declared holiday as per the negotiable Act. Banks also observe holidays during occasions such as general elections in their respective geographies. However, on other days, banks operate during usual banking hours. Most public sector banks operate from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. whereas, private sector banks usually open at 9:30 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
