A man using a motorized wheelchair died after being struck by a Sprinter train in Vista Thursday morning, a sheriff’s official said.
The collision happened shortly after 9 a.m. on train tracks at the intersection of Main Street and South Santa Fe Avenue, about two blocks from the Vista Transit Center. The man died before he could be taken to a hospital.
It was not immediately clear if the crash was accidental or intentional, a sheriff’s spokesperson said. The sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit is investigating the crash.
No other details were immediately available.
The Vista crash was at least the eighth fatal train strike this year. Four deaths occurred in the span of five days in January, and three more were reported earlier this month.
