Authorities on Wednesday released the names of two men — including a security guard — who died after a Friday night shootout in a Grantville apartment complex marketed to San Diego State University students.
Police also announced they arrested one suspect in the poolside shooting, during which at least three people pulled out guns and opened fire. Police homicide Lt. Jud Campbell said the shootout appears to have been gang-related.
The victims fatally shot were identified as Joseph Taylor, 31, and Lavion Estridge, 24.
Taylor is a San Diego resident but did not live at the Union Grantville complex, Campbell said.
Estridge was a security guard at the complex, which opened last August on Alvarado Canyon Road near a trolley stop. The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System has said most of the building’s 600 residents attend SDSU.
The initial investigation indicates there was some sort of argument among a group of people near the pool area inside the complex shortly before 9 p.m. Friday. That’s when, Campbell says, at least three people “pulled out firearms and began shooting.”
Police responded and found Taylor and Estridge in a stairwell. They died at hospitals.
The investigation led detectives to arrest at least one suspect — Charles Patrick Burke, 31. Campbell said police located Burke at a Rancho Bernardo gas station Tuesday, and arrested him without incident.
Jail records indicate Burke was arrested on suspicion of murder and other charges, and is being held without bail. He is slated to be arraigned Thursday in San Diego Superior Court.
