Residents in Campo were notified this week that a sexually violent predator is scheduled to move into their community by the end of the month, sheriff’s officials said.
Alan Earl James will be moved from a state mental health hospital to a residence at 1138 Custer Road, near state Route 94 and Campo Road, on or before March 22, according to the District Attorney’s Office website.
He will be the seventh sexually violent predator to be housed in a rural San Diego County community, officials said.
Members of the multi-agency Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force, went door to door in the neighborhood Wednesday to distribute notifications, sheriff’s officials said.
The Sheriff’s Department said that the notifications are intended to inform the public, allowing them to protect themselves and their children, but should not prompt people to threaten or harass James.
James, who is diagnosed with pedophilia, was convicted in 1981 of a lewd act upon a child under the age of 14 and was sentenced to three years probation and 180 days in jail, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Five years later, he was convicted of committing multiple sex crimes against three children including unlawful sexual intercourse and kidnapping for the purpose of child molest. He was sentenced to 28 years in prison in 1986.
In the years since, James has petitioned the government multiple times to be released. He was recommended for community supervision in 2018 and was placed in Jacumba in 2019. A year later, officials with the release program recommended James’ supervision be revoked after he violated the terms of his supervision.
He was then sent back to Coalinga State Hospital until there could be further hearings.
San Diego Superior Court Judge David Gill granted the latest proposed placement on Feb. 9, despite Campo residents voicing concerns over James moving to their community during the hearing.
