Two passengers in a disabled Honda were killed when a pickup truck slammed into the car on Interstate 15 near Miramar early Saturday morning, and both drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, officials said.
The crash happened just before 2:45 a.m. near Miramar Way, California Highway Patrol Officer Salvador Castro said.
The initial investigation indicates the Honda Civic was headed north on the freeway when it rear-ended a Toyota 4-Runner, Castro said.
The crash left the Honda disabled in traffic lanes, where it was struck by a Chevrolet Colorado, a midsize pickup truck.
Two passengers in the car died. Castro did not provide any information about the victims, such as ages or where they resided, and their names were withheld until family members could be notified of their death.
The 25-year-old Escondido man who’d been driving the Honda and the 22-year-old Sun City man who’d been driving the pickup were each arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Northbound lanes were closed for about three and a half hours as CHP officers investigated.
