A 36-year-old man was killed in a shooting on a Chula Vista street late Saturday night and officers arrested a suspect a short time later, a police spokesperson said.
Chula Vista police responded around 11 p.m. to multiple reports of shots fired on Center Street near Third Avenue, Sgt. Anthony Molina said in a news release.
Arriving officers were flagged down by witnesses near a parked truck, Molina said. The victim was found inside the truck suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he died. His name has not been released pending notification of his family.
Witnesses told police that the alleged gunman had fled the scene in a white pickup truck with distinct markings, Molina said.
Around midnight, an officer spotted a vehicle matching the description driving west on H Street. Police stopped the truck and detained the driver and a passenger.
Police said one of the occupants, 32-year-old Christian Benavides, was in possession of a firearm and was arrested. He was being held without bail in county jail on suspicion of murder.
It was not immediately clear if the second person inside the truck was also arrested.
The shooting is under investigation. Anyone with additional information related to the case is asked to contact San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or submit a tip via P3tips online at http://p3tips.com/409 or anonymously through the mobile application.
