Two drivers were killed early Wednesday in a wrong-way collision on southbound Interstate 5 in Chula Vista, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Drivers reported seeing a speeding driver heading north on the southbound freeway in the fast lane starting at the border just after 3:20 a.m., the CHP said on its online log.
The driver hit another vehicle head-on just north of Palomar Street, the CHP said. That car burst into flames.
Both drivers were killed, CHP Officer Salvador Castro said.
As of 7:30 a.m., all southbound lanes remained closed with traffic being diverted off the freeway at J Street, Castro said. Morning commuters were finding speeds in the the single digits starting at the state Route 54 connector.
