Lloyds Pharmacy, located in Sainsbury’s supermarkets, will be shutting down its 237 branches by June 13 putting over 2,000 jobs at risk.
The chain originally planned to close hundreds of UK sites by the end of the year but these have now been brought forward.
The news comes after the chemist announced restructuring plans and private equity firm Aurelius bought Lloyds Pharmacy from Sainsbury’s last year.
The company blamed the “changing market conditions” for the closures and explained that customers have been informed “of when services from their specific pharmacy will end so that they can transfer their nominations”.
Lloyds Pharmacy is the second-largest pharmacy in the country after Boots, and some of the affected branches are located in Newport, Derby and Gloucester.

A spokesperson from LloydsPharmacy explained: “In January 2023 LloydsPharmacy announced the withdrawal of pharmacy services from all Sainsbury’s stores, to take place throughout 2023.
“It can now confirm that any remaining branches within the Sainsbury’s estate will close by June 13, 2023.
“Throughout the process, LloydsPharmacy has been committed to helping patients easily find a suitable alternative provision. It has kept patients informed of when services from their specific pharmacy will end so that they can transfer their nominations as needed,” they told Pharmacy Business.
CEO of the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies, Dr Leyla Hannback, commented: “Sad to see the end of an era for Sainsbury’s Lloyds pharmacies as all their 237 branches close permanently tomorrow.
“Pharmacies provide accessibility to care for the public and years of underfunding has led to many shutting their doors for good.”
