Johnny Depp has been away from Hollywood for quite a while. After he was axed from his legendary Pirates of the Caribbean series by Disney back in 2018, he spent a lot of time in courtrooms battling his ex-wife, Amber Heard, over abuse and defamation allegations. Now, he is filming Jeanne du Barry under the direction of French star Maïwenn. But they have already had some issues on the set.
Depp was apparently furious by this action, and instantly let Maïwenn know she had messed up.
She continued: “There, he made me understand that I had committed an unacceptable intrusion and asked me how I would have felt if he came knocking on my dressing room door.”
Maïwenn went on to explain that things are very different in France compared to Hollywood. “I replied that everyone does it all the time. Because that’s how a set works in France!” she said.
Despite this mishap, Maïwenn admitted that the Captain Jack Sparrow was trying hard to fit in with everyone on the movie set.
Maïwenn said: “He was making an effort, even though I could see that it was still confusing to him. I understood that in the United States, the stars don’t really get directed. They explain to the director how they are going to play the scene and the director follows the flow. But in France, the boss is the director.
“So for every take, I obviously shot his proposals, but I also asked him to interpret my own vision, so we could have a choice during editing. He was game for that.”
She also praised him and his craft, calling him “fascinating”
She explained: “His star status, he didn’t steal it. For me, as someone who wants a less talky film, it’s fascinating to see everything that Johnny conveys through his face, his gaze. Like a silent actor.”
Depp still has a passionate fanbase who will no doubt support his next picture, Jeanne du Barry – but they will no doubt want him to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow.
And they aren’t the only people keen to see the actor make a comeback to the series. Pirates of the Caribbean’s executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently spoke out about the next movie in the franchise, saying: “We’re all working on it [the next Pirates film]. We’ll see how it comes out. We’re very excited, I think we’re gonna have a great screenplay when, and we’re getting close.”
When quizzed on the possibility of seeing Depp come back, he replied: “We’ll see. I would love it. I would love to have him in the movie – that’s all that I can tell you.”
