During the events of Avengers Infinity War, the Marvel superheroes tried and failed to stop Thanos from obtaining all six Infinity Stones and killing half the universe.
But now Marvel fans have spotted how Doctor Strange could have stopped the Mad Titan much earlier on in the movie.
As spotted by @DesertedScope, Cull Obsidian had his hand chopped off by the sorcerers closing a portal. So why didn’t Strange and Wong do the same to Thanos to get the Infinity Gauntlet?
Twitter user @DesertedScope wrote: “Y’all remember when Infinity War established in the first 20 min[s] that Doctor Strange can severe Hands with his portals & then they spend 2 hour & 40 min of the movie trying to take off the gauntlet from Thanos hand instead of cutting his hand off.”
It’s a really good plot hole observation, although perhaps a counter-argument is Doctor Strange’s soon-to-be-discovered foreknowledge.
Soon after this New York scene, the sorcerer found himself on Titan with Iron Man and Tony Stark. He then used the Time Stone to view all 14,000,605 possible outcomes of the coming conflict with Thanos.
Of those he saw, he told Tony Stark that there was only one in which the Avengers managed to defeat him.
So presumably Doctor Strange just cutting off his hand would still somehow have resulted in the Avengers losing.
Instead, the sorcerer realised that he had to stop Thanos from killing Tony, then let him temporarily kill half the universe. Then five years later Iron Man was able to give his life to defeat a variant of the villain in Avengers Endgame.
