After a yearslong closure, federal officials announced Saturday that travelers can again head into Mexico at the PedWest pedestrian crossing at San Ysidro Port of Entry starting Monday.
The southbound facility will be open seven days a week between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m., U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a news release. The announcement follows the agency’s decision to reopen northbound traffic at the crossing on Thursday. That facility will be operational from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“With the resumption of operations at the Pedestrian West southbound facility, we are taking steps to return to operational capacity and improve the daily life of thousands of travelers in the region who cross every day,” said Mariza Marin, port director of the San Ysidro Port of Entry, in a statement. “CBP will continue to work on enhancing economic and social relations across the border, particularly on the eve of the holiday season.”
Traffic into Mexico had been suspended at PedWest since April 2022. Northbound traffic initially re-opened in January and was closed again in mid-September so the agency could assist Border Patrol with processing an increasing number of asylum seekers, officials had said.
