Fun, catchy and lasting, the ‘New King’ single composed by London- based children’s author and teacher Banji Alexander is a must-listen, capturing the King’s Coronation from a child’s perspective in a unique musical memento.
The vibrant mix features string and horn sections reminiscent of 70s disco/soul blended with a pop hook, hip hop groove and funk bass line. Banji’s soulful vocal weaves into those of his young, all singing and dancing protégés creating a very timely hit.
“Having a new monarch ascend to the throne is such a historic moment, it made me want to mark that in a fun and engaging way for my primary aged audience. It is also the first song to be taken from my next book, which is a musical, also titled, ‘New King’,” says Banji.
During the last seven months he has visited 75 schools giving young people a voice by asking them: “If you were king from today, how would you celebrate?”.
Those conversations sparked the idea for his song and gathering a group of from those he had met they recorded his Coronation song and formed a collective now known as Banji’s Class – for them a very modern fairy tale come true.
