Investigators have arrested a third suspect in connection with the slaying of Corey McCastle, who was gunned down in Chula Vista more than three years ago.
Veotis Thomas, 57, of La Mesa, was arrested Oct. 11 on suspicion of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection to the March 2020 shooting, Chula Vista police Sgt. Anthony Molina said Tuesday.
Two other men, 29-year-old Victor Nunez of San Diego and 28-year-old Aaron Gonzalez of Murrieta, were arrested earlier this year, Molina said.
Thomas was already in Sheriff’s Department custody on assault and domestic violence charges when he was arrested on the latest allegations, according to online jail records.
On the night of the shooting, officers responded to a report of multiple gunshots heard shortly after 10 p.m. on E Street between Interstate 5 and Woodlawn Avenue, Molina said.
McCastle, 41, was found at the scene suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Investigators learned McCastle and a woman had gone to the location to speak with an unknown person about some sort of dispute over a dog, police said at the time. Witnesses said a gunman then ran up to McCastle and shot him.
The woman was uninjured, and the gunman escaped.
Four suspects were identified in connection with the shooting, but their alleged roles in the killing were not immediately clear.
No further information about the case was given due to investigators still searching for the final suspect, Molina said.
