A 57-year-old man was killed and a 36-year-old man was arrested after a fatal shooting near Little Italy early Thursday, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The shooting was reported near south Interstate 5 and the Front Street off-ramp around 3:55 a.m., CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.
San Diego police officers were the first to arrive and found a man — a resident of San Diego — suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, Bettencourt said. He died before he could be taken to a hospital.
His name was not immediately released.
Given the location of the shooting, the CHP major crimes unit was called to the scene and took over the investigation.
Investigators quickly identified Travis Antoine Thomas of San Diego as a suspect in the case, Bettencourt said. Less than 12 hours later, Thomas was located and arrested on suspicion of murder.
No other information was available on Thursday.
