San Diego State will play 31 regular-season games this season. Here are five to watch:
Nov. 10 at BYU
The closest thing SDSU basketball has to a true rival, left over from their epic battles in the Mountain West. This is the sixth year in a row they’ve played, but the future of the series could be clouded by BYU’s move to the Big 12 and the decreased need for resume-building nonconference games.
Nov. 17 vs. Saint Mary’s
The Continental Tire Main Event at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena offers a chance for resume building, facing the No. 23 Gaels and then Xavier or Washington two days later. It is the fourth straight year the West Coast powers have played on a neutral court, with Saint Mary’s winning last December.
Dec. 29 at Gonzaga
It is rare in the era of neutral-site, made-for-TV events for high profile programs to schedule a home-and-home series. It makes for a tough road date against probably the highest ranked opponent (No. 11) on SDSU’s schedule, but the payoff is Mark Few and Co. coming to Viejas Arena next season.
Jan. 13 at New Mexico
The second of three conference games for the Aztecs on big-boy CBS or Fox. The Lobos have been waiting for this game since Lamont Butler’s buzzer-beating, game-winning 3-pointer silenced a sellout crowd at the Pit last February and put a dent in their NCAA Tournament aspirations.
March 8 vs. Boise State
The regular-season finale at Viejas Arena matches teams picked first and second in the Mountain West media poll. They split last season, the Aztecs winning big at home and the Broncos closing the game on a 14-0 run to win in Boise on Feb. 28. SDSU wouldn’t lose again until the NCAA Tournament final.
