At least one person was killed Monday night in a freeway crash that briefly closed down all lanes of state Route 94 in southeastern San Diego.
The crash was reported about 7:10 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the freeway near the Euclid Avenue exit, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.
Multiple 911 callers reported several different but chaotic versions of events, according to the incident log.
The first caller reported that a single vehicle, possibly a dark colored Jeep Wrangler, crashed into the concrete center divider, according to the log. A 911 caller also reported that a motorcyclist had crashed, been hit by another vehicle and was dragging himself toward the freeway median. At least one caller reported that a pedestrian was struck on the freeway.
Another caller told a CHP dispatcher that multiple people were out of their vehicles and in freeway lanes trying to wave down other motorists, according to the log.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Matt Nilsen said the dispatch call that firefighters received wasn’t much clearer — it was reported to them as either a downed motorcyclist or a person ejected from a vehicle. Nilsen didn’t know which of those scenarios, if either, ended up being accurate.
According to the CHP, at least one person died and officers at the scene requested the county Medical Examiner’s Office to respond. It was unclear Monday night if anyone else was injured.
The CHP reported that, at least for a time, all lanes of the freeway in both directions were shut down. Caltrans San Diego posted on social media that the left lanes on the eastbound side of the freeway remained blocked just before 8 p.m.
No other details about the deadly incident were immediately available.
