The county Sheriff Department’s arson and bomb squad and the county medical examiner are investigating the death of a man found inside an abandoned and burning Spring Valley home early Sunday morning.
An emergency call brought law enforcement to a house on Eileen and Harness streets about 4 a.m. Responding firefighters found the rear of the home engulfed in flames when they arrived, said sheriff’s Lt. Matthew Carpenter.
San Miguel Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Nick Nava said the initial response was “defensive,” due to known issues with the property.
“We didn’t commit crews inside the structure because of the hazards from construction hazards to open trenching on the property to electrical utility issues,” Nava said.
It took about 40 minutes for San Diego Gas & Electric crews and deputies to make it safe for firefighters to enter the burning building. While putting out the fire, a deceased person was found inside the home, sheriff’s Detective Dan Wilson said in a statement.
No information about the man who died was immediately released.
