Film fans who tuned into the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday night (16th February) were left furious as they claimed one film was snubbed over all the rest.
Doctor Who star David Tennant hosted the ceremony this weekend, which saw the brightest stars from Hollywood and the UK descend on the Royal Festival Hall in London.
Religious thriller Conclave led the pack this year, with a staggering 12 nominations, and won both Best Film and Outstanding British Film.
However, there were plenty of fans hoping blockbuster musical Wicked would take home its fair share.
Despite being nominated for Best Film and Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, it only walked away with two awards.
The adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical scored both Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, but fans were clearly expecting a lot more.
Several furious viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) during the awards on BBC One to express their disappointment.
“Who did Wicked p*** off at BAFTA?! What a joke. That film deserves all of the awards.”
“Wicked has been robbed tonight!” someone else fumed. And another agreed: “Wicked [has] been robbed on every single award they’ve been up for in the awards season. IN MY OPINION!!!!”
A third said: “Also the fact Wicked was not nominated for Best Picture reeks of musical snobbery.”
Another complained: “Are you joking me. Wicked has been robbed left right and centre.”
In the musical Wizard of Oz reimagining, Erivo portrays Elphaba Thropp, a young, green sorceress who eventually becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the West.
Grande portrays her college rival Galinda, aka Glinda the Good Witch. Many fans of the film were especially frustrated that the pop star wasn’t awarded for her performance.
“So ariana didn’t win supporting actress and cynthia didn’t win leading actress im convinced the baftas are rigged,” one post raged.
“Ariana grande ROBBED by the baftas…. oscars im watching you,” another exclaimed.
And a final fan wrote: “Sorry but ariana grande has been robbed AGAIN. if she doesn’t win this oscar im gonna go crazy #BAFTAs.”
Erivo and Grande have both been nominated at this year’s Academy Awards, but they face stiff competition.
Both recipients of their respective BAFTA awards, Mikey Madison for Anora and Zoe Saldaña for Emilia Perez, are also up for the Oscars. But who will emerge victorious?
The BAFTA Film Awards 2025 are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
