Crews are installing a permanent barrier at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, a popular photo and sightseeing spot in Point Loma, to prevent injuries from dangerous bluff collapses and falling rocks, officials said Monday.
The small barricade is being erected in areas between Adair Street and Osprey Street, replacing a temporary one that had been put in place due to cracks that had developed alongside the cliffside along the waterline and away from the road, officials said.
“(The cracks) have worsened and city staff believe they present a potential risk to people who could be standing on the bluff or the sand below,” city officials said in a news release. “High surf that is expected this week presents the potential for further damage and erosion to the cliffs.”
City officials said the construction should be completed within the next week.
In the meantime, the area will be blocked off with caution tape and signs that warn visitors to avoid the bluffs.
The area being cordoned off has been an access point for decades, but it was never officially designated under the 2005 Sunset Cliffs Natural Park Master Plan, city officials said.
The bluffs along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard are part of the Coastal Resilience Master Plan, which is currently in the drafting stage, city officials said.
