A quick-moving brush fire in in Fallbrook west of Interstate 15 prompted evacuation orders as it threatened homes Friday afternoon.
The fire, dubbed the Garden fire, broke out at approximately 1 p.m. and within a half hour had spread to 15 acres, according to North County Fire Protection District officials.
Firefighters reported it had the potential to grow to 100 acres due to its “moderate to dangerous rate” of spread. It was first reported in the area of Lake Garden Drive east of Gird Road.
“The winds are coming from the south and pushing the fire north,” Fire Captain John Choi said.

Evacuations were ordered for the neighborhoods north of state Route 76 and south of Pala Mesa Drive. Around 1:30 p.m. officials updated the evacuation zone to include a few neighborhoods near Gird Road and Knottwood Way.
An evacuation site was set up at Riverview Church at 4980 Sweetgrass Lane.
