Rep. Mike Levin, a Democrat running for a fourth two-year term in the 49th Congressional District representing the coastal communities in North County and in southern Orange County, retained his comfortable lead with the latest unofficial primary election results released Monday.
Levin received almost twice as many votes, or 50.7 percent of the total, compared to his closest challenger, Republican Matt Gunderson with 25.9 percent across the two counties, according to the California Secretary of State’s Office. Both candidates can be confident of a face-off in November.

None of the other four San Diego County congressional districts crosses county lines, and incumbents remained well ahead in the results reported so far for the March 5 primary. The top two in each district will be in the November general election.
Republican incumbent Darrell Issa had 62.54 percent of the vote in the 48th District, with Democrat Stephen Houlahan second at 15.71 percent to qualify as Issa’s likely opponent, according to results reported Monday by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters’ Office.
Other candidates in the 48th District were Democrats Whitney Shanahan with 10.75 percent, Mike Simon with 7.86 percent, Matthew G. Rascon with 2.15 percent, and independent Lucinda KWH Jahn with 0.99 percent.
