A 52-year-old driver and his passenger died Sunday in a crash on state Route 54 in the Bay Terraces neighborhood of San Diego, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The driver was headed west on the freeway about 2:30 a.m. when he veered to the right, causing the car — a Nissan 370z — to hit a curb and guardrail. The car then went down a steep ravine and overturned, CHP Officer Salvador Castro said.
The driver and passenger died at the scene, Castro said. Their names were not released, pending family notifications. The passenger’s age was unavailable.
The Woodman Drive on-ramp to west SR-54 was closed during the investigation.
The cause of the crash was under investigation. Investigators had not determined whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. A toxicology report was pending, Castro said.
Witnesses were asked to call the CHP at (858) 293-6000.
