NORTH COUNTY —
A 39-year-old Orange County man who died after he crashed into the back of a big rig on Interstate 5 in Del Mar last month has been identified, the county Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Eric John Cavaness was driving south on I-5 near Del Mar Heights Road when his pickup collided with the rear of a southbound Kenworth tractor trailer around 4:15 a.m. on Jan. 25, authorities said. The truck became wedged underneath the big rig.
Firefighters who responded to the crash pulled Cavaness out of the pickup. He died before he could be taken to a hospital, the Medical Examiner’s Office said. He was a resident of Mission Viejo, the office said.
The crash is under investigation.
